Master your breath, master your life.

Updated: Jun 12, 2024

Our breath, our prana, our life force energy.

We all know breathing is important, because without the breath, there is no life force energy.

Breath, like all things, has both a spiritual and biological component.

Biologically, a balanced breath can calm the mind, reduce stress, and increase focus. Deep controlled breathing can massage and stimulate our inner organs, purify and oxygenate the blood, and improve our cardiovascular strength and circulation. Right (correct) breathing in time, depth, and number is so important to the sustainability of life that every nurse's chart records it.

Spiritually, right breathing can assist us in navigating different levels of consciousness.

There are many things in life that are out of our control but we can always control our breath. And in doing so, our higher path is able to be revealed to us.

Conscious breathing is truly the essence of yoga as it connects us with our subtle energy system within.

As we slow our breathing down, pause and hold, and take slow exhalations out, we calm our minds and nourish our bodies with breath.  It is in this still and relaxed state that we are invited to access a higher state of consciousness within us.

We all know breathing is important, because without the breath, there is no life force energy.

Respiratory arrest causes death, unless revived with breath and circulation. Right before a patient goes into respiratory arrest, you notice signs of increased rate of breath, decreased depth, pallor, lightheadedness, decreased consciousness, sweating. The breath has the ability to affect every organ system in the body.

If there is one thing I know that sends my breath completely out of whack, it is stress.  What happens when stress or worry takes over the body?

The nervous system kicks in to fight or flight response. The heart beats faster because the body senses a threat. More blood is being pumped to our vital organs. We start to sweat. Our metabolism halts to conserve energy.

What happens to our breath?

What happens to our life force energy?

It speeds up, right? It seems uncontrollable. We begin shallow fast breathing. We remove the pause at the top of our breath, not properly allowing the breath and blood to make contact. Not properly purifying our organs with oxygen-- with life force energy!

Many health problems can result from an imbalanced breath, because an imbalanced breath leads to an imbalanced body.

Our bodies require a very specific acid-base balance. Rapid breathing, as in bouts of panic, anxiety, or stress can lead to inadequate gas exchange, leading to excess carbon dioxide which can affect any and every organ system!  But- we need not remain in this state.

What if we could simply master our own breath?

What if we owned the responsibility of mastering our physical health with our breath? What if we stepped into the power we were given to master our minds with our breath? What if we practiced mastering our emotional states with our breath?

What if we used a balanced breath as a gateway to a balanced life ...

I’m not saying there’s not some other components involved, because there will always be multiple components that factor into our overall health. We must to move our bodies and nourish them well.  We must think kind and healing thoughts.  We must regulate and balance our emotional charges. And we must trust in our Higher selves, and our path, which is already unfolding exactly as it should.

This all begins with the breath.

The breath is directly involved in physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health.

Control your inhalations and exhalations, and begin to notice the control you have over the incoming and outgoing currents of your life.

Something as simple as our breath which we do automatically, instinctively,  every day to keep us alive.. Something so simple, so forgotten, that people take it for granted until they are in a moment that takes their breath away. Let us not discount this powerful life force energy.

Let’s take our breath off autopilot.

  • Seal the lips

  • Take a deep breath in through the nose, right now, in gratitude for your breath.

  • Fill your lungs top, middle, base, then squeeze in just a little sip more of that life giving breath as your diaphragm and ribcage expand. …

  • Pause at the top. How blessed we are to have our breath.

  • Exhale slowly with total control.  Coming back into balance. What a beautiful gift our life force energy is.

Let us accept this gift of control over our powerful, life giving breath.

Let us continue to utilize our breath to come back into balance, over and over and over again.

Yoga and meditation are excellent ways to tap into the power of your breath in a guided and structured way.
